Board of Education Trustee Areas

Until recently, Davis Joint Unified School District (DJUSD) Board of Education members were elected through an At-Large election system. Under this system, candidates for the Board of Education could reside anywhere in DJUSD's area of service and were elected by the registered voters who resided throughout DJUSD's area of service.

In accordance with the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA), the Board of Education voted to transition to a By-Trustee area election system on May 16, 2019, through the adoption of Resolution No. 41-19 Resolution Initiating Process of Establishing Trustee Areas and Elections By-Trustee Areas.

On November 21, 2019, the Davis Joint Unified School Board of Trustees reviewed seven By-Trustee area maps and adopted this map. The By-Trustee Area map took effect for the By-Trustee Area Elections in November 2020.

Recently, the state of California certified the 2020 Census results, which are used to determine if the District is in compliance with the CVRA. Upon initial analysis of the 2020 Census data DJUSD will need to modify the existing By-Trustee-Areas by February 2022 in order to remain in compliance with the CVRA.

On October 21, 2021, the Board directed staff to develop a Trustee Area Map that would comply with the CVRA, conduct a public forum to receive feedback on the proposed map and hold a public hearing prior to Board approval of the proposed Trustee Area Map. Staff will provide the Board with the rationale for the proposal and demonstrate how the revised map is in compliance with the CVRA.

On November 18, 2021, the Board of Education voted to adopt this Trustee Area Map. The presentation can be viewed here.
