Board of Education Trustee Areas

Overview

Until recently, Davis Joint Unified School District (DJUSD) Board of Education members were elected through an At-Large election system. Under this system, candidates for the Board of Education could reside anywhere in DJUSD's area of service and were elected by the registered voters who resided throughout DJUSD's area of service.

In accordance with the California Voting Rights Act, the Board of Education voted to transition to a By-Trustee area election system on May 16, 2019, through the adoption of Resolution No. 41-19 Resolution Initiating Process of Establishing Trustee Areas and Elections By-Trustee Areas.

What Does this Mean for Board Elections?

Under the new system, Board members will be elected By-Trustee area, which means they will be required to live in the geographic area they represent and will be elected only by the registered voters of that geographic area. The By-Trustee area election process will go into effect for the Board of Education election in November 2020.

What are Trustee Areas?

On November 21, 2019, the Davis Joint Unified School Board of Trustees reviewed seven By-Trustee area maps and adopted this map. The By-Trustee Area map will take effect when the District makes the switch to By-Trustee Area Elections in November 2020.

Trustee November 2020 Election Information

After the November election, Davis School District will swear in three new Trustees to the Board of Education.

Trustees Bob Poppenga and Alan Fernandes were both elected in 2016 on an At-Large basis (across the entire school district) and are not pursuing re-election. Because of the District’s transition from At-Large elections to By-Trustee Area elections, the seats in Trustee Areas 2 and 5 will now be decided by a subset of Davis voters who live in those respective Trustee Areas.

-In Trustee Area 2, only one candidate filed for the vacant seat; as such, there will not be an election.

-In Trustee Area 5, voters will select a new Trustee from two candidates on the November ballot.

-A third Trustee seat, vacated by former Trustee Cindy Pickett, will also be on the November ballot. Voting to fill the seat’s remaining term of two (2) years will still occur through the At-Large election system (by all Davis voters).
