One Community: Response to Recent Anti-Semitic Violence and Hate Acts
Posted on 10/31/2018
We All Belong

This week we turn our hearts and thoughts to those individuals and families who were victims of the shooting last Saturday at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. On our school campuses, flags fly at half staff. For many in our own community, the hate violence that took place in Pennsylvania feels very close to home and personal. For many in our schools, the tragedy contributes to feelings of fear, danger and insecurity even in Davis Joint Unified.

On Tuesday, multiple swastikas were found scrawled in a bathroom at Holmes Junior High. While we are certainly not immune from acts of hate perpetrated on our campuses, this particular act which happened just in the wake of the shootings in Pittsburgh, is especially vexing. The incident at Holmes Junior High was immediately reported to the Davis Police and we are working with them to investigate.

Perhaps more importantly, I am proud that our school and District response, without exception, has been to remain firmly committed to our values of acceptance, tolerance and inclusion. Many efforts are being made this week to grapple with the anti-Semitic violence in Pittsburgh and the acts of hate at Holmes Junior High. Our counselors are available at every school to support students or others who may be struggling with pain or questions and I encourage anyone in our community to reach out for material or emotional support. Holmes Principal Jean Kennedy has spoken with students and has messaged parents about the hate incident on that campus. The principal of Davis Senior High is reaching out to the Jewish Student Union and administrators and teachers across our District are leading hard conversations about the ways hate violence and hate speech have real effects on people in our community and how we can support one another.

In DJUSD, we believe strongly and deeply in cultivating an environment where students, families and staff feel safe and belong and where all are welcomed and able to thrive and contribute to a richer and more vibrant community. This DJUSD commitment is never more pronounced or important than when an individual or group feels threatened or harmed.

Yesterday, I joined Rabbi Wolfe and many others in our Davis community to light a candle in memory of victims of the Pittsburgh shooting. Today and every day, as a school community, we stand together in support of all students and families honoring the diversity of human experiences and perspectives.

Sincerely,
John A. Bowes, Ed. D.
Superintendent

Atentamente, John A. Bowes, Ed. D. Superintendente
