Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

In DJUSD we are beginning a journey using a tested approach to improve student outcomes. New practices and technology allow our educators to proactively use data and to identify the needs of individual students.

What is MTSS?

Multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) is an integrated, comprehensive framework that focuses on the prevention, early identification, early intervention and support that is necessary for all students to learn, engage and thrive. california mtss logo

This framework is delivered within multiple tiers that are layered upon one another. Tier 1, which may be called “core” or “first best instruction” are the evidence-based practices that support meaningful and accessible learning for all students. Each site will have an MTSS team that will review site level qualitative and quantitative data for individual students as well as trend data for their particular site. When a student is struggling, varying levels of support might be applied as necessary. Tier 2 represents targeted small group intervention and Tier 3 represents intensive individualized instruction. As an example, a student may receive Tier 2 interventions in math and Tier 3 support to address more intense social emotional needs.

Our Work This Year

On a District level, our efforts for the 2019-20 school year will be focused on organizing resources, aligning structures, policies and practices and ensuring that this alignment is adequately resourced so that schools can optimize supports to best meet the academic, behavioral and social emotional needs of their students.

We have already begun to strengthen and align systems and structures developed across our District to ensure every student has equitable access to high-quality instruction and support. As part of this effort we have a District MTSS team and each of our schools will have MTSS Teams for schools to monitor student data, make decisions about supports for students, and share instructional practices that are working.

Support for implementing MTSS in schools will be provided through a tiered structure and aligned to each school's goals and needs.
